#043: vertigo

vertigo, n.
a sensation of whirling and loss of balance, associated particularly with looking down from a great height

love is like bungee jumping –

you stand on the ledge
and the count begins

three:
you feel the wind whistling through your hair
and you become acutely aware
of exactly how high up you are –
a crippling sense of vertigo hits you
as you try to imagine how long the fall will take

two:
you imagine yourself pitching forward,
headfirst,
tumbling
out
and
plummeting
down
as the ground beneath you
races up to meet your face

one:
you blink back into reality and inhale a breath
of cold, dry air that scratches its way into your lungs
gingerly, you back up to make way
for couples with hands entwined,
running and leaping into the void
with reckless abandon, secure knowing that
they aren’t falling alone.
